The Wasatch Institute of Technology held its first chess tournament on Saturday, Aug. 15 for seventh- through 12th-grade students. Students needed to register, but there was no cost.

The five-round tournament began at 8:30 a.m., with check-in starting at 8 a.m. at the charter school, located at 120 W. Vine St. There were awards given for the best player for each grade level. Food and shirts were available for purchase.

“We would like to offer the tournament annually,” WIT business manager Leif Nelson said. “This is an opportunity for students to come enjoy playing chess and have a chance to meet other kids who like the same thing and see the school. We have chess boards set up around the school, so often in the mornings, lunch or after school, students are playing.”

Nelson said that they offered the tournament as students geared up for school, but aren’t burdened with other activities or a financial cost to register.

“It gives students who have never played in a tournament a chance to compete and see if they want to play in other tournaments,” he said.
