St. Mark's Hospital
A hospital's reputation plays a very important role when patients are choosing a hospital to receive treatment. St. Mark's Hospital, at 1200 East 3900 South, has built a solid reputation since its humble beginnings in 1872. St. Mark's has a place in Utah history as the first hospital to be built in the state as well as to institute the first ambulance service. Back in the day, patients were transported in a horse-drawn cart.
Now over a century later, St. Mark's has continued with that tradition of carving out new territory and leading the way. It was recently honored as the first hospital to receive the designation of Stroke Receiving Facility by the Utah Hospital Association. The American Heart Association also gave its heart center a silver level status for its stroke care.
"We have all the protocols in place to treat stroke patients in a timely manner," says Marketing and Communications Director Kate Moss. "The quicker we get them treated, the less damage the patient will have."
Steve Bateman, St. Mark's chief executive officer, understands how critical time is for heart attack patients as well. Steve initiated the charge to raise money for life saving technology. As CEO, he understood the conditions of a tough economy but as a board member of Utah Hospitals and Health Systems he was able to get the support of local hospitals to raise $133,000. That funding helped various emergency departments in Salt Lake County purchase 12-lead electrocardiograms with blue tooth technology.
"Steve saw what the community needed and now these departments are able to use this technology to treat heart attack patients faster and save more lives," Kate says.
This latest 12-lead electrocardiogram looks at the heart in 12 different directions with 12 cameras to isolate the portion of the heart with the blockage. The blue tooth technology within the monitor immediately transmits the information to the hospital for physicians to read and prepare before the patient arrives.
St. Mark's is part of the MountainStar Healthcare, a network of family of hospitals from Brigham City to Payson. Kate says they are very excited to open the Draper Lone Peak Medical Campus in May which will be a satellite of St. Mark's Hospital. The campus is built around a fully functional emergency department separate from a hospital. It's staffed with the same board certified physicians and highly trained nurses found at St. Mark's Hospital. The campus was designed with the needs of the community in mind and is just one more example of this healthcare network's ingenuity.
