Murray Arts presents Missoula Children's Theater's 'Treasure Island' May 13-14

Missoula Children's Theater and approximately 50 Murray youth will present "Treasure Island" on Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, May 14 at 2 p.m., at Murray High Little Theater. Shiver your timbers and follow young Jim Hawkins and his friends as they sail a dangerous sea of adventure with Long John Silver and his pirate band in an original musical adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's epic novel.

Tickets can be purchased at the Murray Parks office or at the door for $5 adults, $3 children and seniors, $15 immediate family, or $50 unlimited group rate.

Believe it or not, this production is being produced in less than one week. And this production will be even more remarkable by performing one day earlier than normal for elementary school children during the Murray High Art Fest on Friday, May 13. Parents and city art administrators alike are amazed each year at how quickly a 75-minute musical pulls together.

The Missoula Children's Theater was co-founded in 1970 with multiple teams of Tour Actor/Directors who travel in pairs serving nearly 1,300 communities in all 50 states, three Canadian territories and five provinces, and 16 countries.

"Murray City has been doing this since 1990," said Murray Cultural Arts Director Mary Ann Kirk. "The program is so unique because the Missoula team provides the auditions, instructions, and brings all the costumes and sets. They also provide three workshops for classroom students. The only thing the city provides is the facility, an accompanist, and housing for the two actors along with publicity and ticket sales."

Kirk said it is an intense rehearsal time period in one week, but parents love it because it doesn't drag on for 6-8 weeks like a typical musical production does. "It is amazing to see how fast the leads learn their script which is handed out right after auditions on Monday night and fully memorized and staged by Thursday."

Funding support for Murray art programs like this production comes from the Zoo, Arts, and Parks program, Utah Division of Arts and Museums, and National Endowment for the Arts. For additional info, phone 801-264-2614.
