Spartan golfers place sixth at state
A change in classification did Murray High’s boys golf team well in postseason.
The Spartans, who had competed in 5A the past few seasons, tied for sixth place as a team at the 4A state championships Oct. 3-4 at Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville. Murray not only improved its place from the previous two years, but also finished with a better team score (637).
Woods Cross won the 4A championship with a team score of 599, easily outdistancing second-place Highland (609). Timpview and Maple Mountain tied for a distant third at 618.
Cameron Howe tied for ninth place as an individual with a two-day total of 149 (77-72). James Kener shot 157 (82-75), John Paulson 163 (77-86), Niko Roumpos 170 (82-88), Andrew Rietveld 170 (84-86) and Dallas Anderson 174 (86-88). The top four individual scores were counted toward the team’s total each round. Murray shot a collective 318 on the first day and 319 the next, showing its consistency.
Woods Cross’ Peyton Hastings had the top individual score at 137 (67-70).
Murray tied for 15th place (656) at last year’s 5A championships and finished 10th (661) in 2009.
