Free event to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
For the 20th year, Murray is celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with an event called “What Are You Doing For Others?” This free performance will be held at Murray High School (5440 South State Street) on Monday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m.
Under the direction of Alan Scott, the Murray High choir will perform and cultural dance groups will participate. All students from past high school choirs are urged to attend.
“It has grown over the years to involve not only the Murray community, but the entire valley; not to just the evening event, but the whole day,” Murray Youth Chamber Director Sheri Van Bibber said. “Years ago we were invited as a youth government and youth chamber to come out to the food bank that morning with the Salt Lake City Mayor, and TO fill boxes to deliver to shut-ins all over the valley. In the past 10 years, Murray has had the largest turnout, and the most variety of ages, from 2 to 88 years of age.”
As part of the event, the MYCC is asking everyone who attends to bring a canned good to donate to the Utah Food Bank. Additionally, volunteers from Murray will spend the morning working at the Utah Food Bank (3150 South 900 West) from 8-11 a.m. Van Bibber said anyone is welcome to join them at the food bank.
A blood drive will also be held that same day in the MHS parking lot from 1-5 p.m. Contact Van Bibber at 801-327-8158 to reserve a time.
