Mayor’s Message

The beginning of the New Year is a good time to report on the accomplishments from 2011.  I have become even more optimistic about the position of our City as I reflect on the changes that have taken place this year.  While you may be aware of many of the improvements around town, there are some that might surprise you.

Fashion Place Mall has completed its facelift and brought an array of new stores. It began with a new look on the inside, then expanded to include a new Nordstrom store and a lifestyle wing anchored by the Cheesecake Factory. Judging by the traffic around the Mall, especially during the holidays, having new-to-Utah shops like Crate and Barrel and H&M are creating a buzz. I congratulate the Mall management on their efforts to keep Fashion Place a destination shopping location.

The Larry H. Miller Company continues to remake their dealerships along State Street. They have completed the new Toyota and Chevrolet dealerships, with the Honda store planning to open in the spring.  A new BMW Mini dealership is being constructed at about 4700 South State Street. Most types of vehicles are available in Murray along this corridor.

The Fireclay area at 4400 South Main is buzzing with activity. A new bridge is being completed over 4500 South 100 West to accommodate the Fireclay Village project that includes a variety of housing and mixed uses. This development will take advantage of the transit stop in this area. A medical rehabilitation facility and another housing project are also underway. The Fireclay projects will create a wonderful gateway on Main Street into our City.

We have worked on road maintenance with slurry seals this year and focused much effort on 4800 South east of State Street. This project will have a final layer of asphalt in the spring to complete it. Many water, sewer and power lines were upgraded or replaced as part of this effort.

A new covered entrance was just completed at the Heritage Center, using Federal Community Development Block Grant funding and $45,000 raised by participants at the Center as well. It will provide a safe drop off point for those who use this wonderful facility.

There is a lot of interest for expanded development in our City right now and I see a very bright future ahead. We continue to work on a new strategic plan to position us to be ready for opportunities as they present themselves. It is exciting to envision the way the City will continue to transform. I wish each of you a Happy New Year!
