New scholarship provides for female athletes

Miss Murray 2012 Mallory Rogers wants to help promote academic and athletic excellence for young women in the Murray community. On Thursday, Jan. 19 from 7-8:30 p.m., Rogers will host a silent auction at Murray High School (5440 South State Street), with the proceeds going toward a new scholarship program.

“We can encourage young women to be well-rounded and maintain healthy lifestyles by awarding funds for college education to those who perform well inside the classroom, while participating in athletics,” Rogers said. “The objective is to award two female students with $500 scholarships toward schools of their choice.”

Scholarship candidates will be selected based upon their grade point average, an essay about their athletic experience, and a short interview with a panel of judges. Candidates must also be seniors attending either Cottonwood or Murray High School. One winner from each school will be selected.

To fund this scholarship, created with local students in mind, Rogers is looking to local businesses for donations. She also recruited former NBA player Shawn Bradley to be the keynote speaker at the event.

The silent auction will feature fine art pieces from local artists, quilts, spa packages, sport packages, hotel stays and many other items.

Donors thus far have included artist/painter Grayden Foulger, Murray Rec Center, County Ice Center in Murray, Trenton McKean (musician), MS Photography, Mary Kay make-up,

Sound Warehouse, Close to my Heart Scrapbooking, Brio, Sports Mall, Red Lobster, Red Robin, United Studios of Self Defense and Wasatch Baskets. And an anonymous donor will match all proceeds raised during the event, up to $1,000.
