As the new school year starts, it’s time to take one final look at the accomplishments of the Cottonwood High School’s senior class of 2020.
Aleigha Beverley was the No. 1 female golfer her senior year at Cottonwood High, according to head tennis coach Greg Southwick.
Beverley was one of only six girls from Cottonwood High to be accepted to the State Championship held at the Fox Hollow Golf Course in American Fork at the end of her senior year.
“Fox Hollow is a difficult course, yet very beautiful,” Beverley said.
During the competition she shot a 109 and placed 41st in the state.
“I was playing with two other girls and we laughed together, lost too many balls together, and became friends,” Beverley said.
Her love for the game of golf began at age 11 when she started tagging along with her dad and brothers to the Riverbend Golf Course in Riverton to chip away at buckets of balls.
“I started to hit with my brother’s clubs when we would all go to the range,” Beverley said. “My favorite to hit with was the driver.”
It wasn’t until her sophomore year of high school that her older brother suggested that she try out for the golf team.
After giving it a try she found that she loved going out on the range and practicing.
“I wasn’t too bad,” Beverley said. “It became a way to release my stress.”
In addition to playing on the varsity golf team, Beverley was editor of the yearbook, HOSA president, and National Honor Society secretary.
Though she was approached by recruiters to play golf in college this 2020-2021 school year, she has decided to keep golf as a hobby and focus solely on her studies.
Beverley is attending the University of Utah on a full-ride academic scholarship where she plans to pursue a career as a physician assistant.
As Beverley looks back at playing high school golf, she considers her biggest accomplishment in her golf career as impressing coach Southwick her sophomore year.
