Murray City officials announced computer hackers attacked the city’s telephone and online services on Aug. 7 causing disruptions to city operations. According to Chief Administrative Officer Doug Hill, the city identified encryption of certain files on its network.

Hackers impacted computers, networks, phones, and online services for approximately one week. As a result, residents could not make utility and other online payments.

“The city is working with third-party specialists to investigate this issue,” Hill said. “The issues have been resolved. Please know the city worked 24/7 to restore systems to normal and secure functionality.”

Murray City allowed additional time to pay bills and did not charge penalties or late fees during that period. However, regarding compromised data, the city posted on its Facebook page, “Should the investigation identify an impact on personal information, we will provide the appropriate notices as necessary.”
